7 Tips for a Safe St. Patrick’s Day with Your Dog

st. patrick's day dogMonday is St. Patrick’s Day – or as some animal lovers prefer to call it, St. Pawtrick’s (or Petrick’s) Day. Here are seven safety tips that will help ensure your pooch has the luck of the Irish on March 17.

  1. Keep green beer and all other booze away from your dog. Drinking even a small amount of alcohol can make dogs very sick, especially the wee ones. (Although, strangely enough, vodka saved the life of a dog in Australia who ingested antifreeze earlier this month.)
  2. Don’t give your dog any chocolate goodies – just one ounce of chocolate can poison a 30-pound dog. But all of these foods are safe to share with your pooch.
  3. If you’re decorating your home with strings of shamrock lights or other electrical decor, be sure to keep the cords out of your dog’s reach. It’s best to keep the cords hidden and off the floor, and turn off the lights when you’re not home. And keep your dog away from shamrock plants – although they are very bitter and your pup isn’t likely to eat them, they are mildly to moderately poisonous for dogs and cats.
  4. Because of the raucous crowds, this isn’t a good time to visit a dog-friendly bar or restaurant with your pooch, but…
  5. …Here are St. Patrick’s Day events across the country that welcome people and their dogs!
  6. If you’re dressing your pooch up in something green, be sure he’s comfortable wearing it. “It should not constrict the animal’s movement or hearing, or impede his ability to breathe or bark,” says the ASPCA on the topic of pet costumes. You should try putting it on your dog prior to St. Patrick’s Day. “If your pet seems distressed, allergic or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting him go au naturale or donning a festive bandana,” the ASPCA advises.
  7. Thinking of dying your dog’s hair green? “Never use human dyes, which can contain harsh chemicals,” warned Nikki Moustaki, i Love Dogs’ Ask a Trainer. “If you decide to dye your pet, use non-toxic, made-for-pet dyes. Talk to a groomer who specializes in pet dye services and ask them to recommend pet-safe products. Be sure that your pet will tolerate the process and don’t try it if it will be too traumatic for your timid pup.”

Happy St. Patrick’s/Pawtrick’s/Petrick’s Day!
